Making Drupal Friendli(er) for Content Editors

Target Skill Level:
Intermediate

Drupal is often touted as a developer-friendly CMS. But it can be daunting to less technical users tasked with managing a Drupal site. However, there are several things we site builders can do to make the experience more intuitive for our content editors and contributors.

Planning Drupal Sites

Target Skill Level:
Everyone

Traditional HTML website planning techniques fall short when used to plan a Drupal site. In an article comparing WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and Plone, Idealware said "The flexibility of the [Drupal] system means it's important to think through the best way to accomplish what you want before diving in." Drupal Websites: A Planner's Guide ( http://planningdrupalsites.com ) is online to help you make informed decisions about your Drupal projects. I won't bore you with what you can already see online.

Intro to version control (git/github)

Target Skill Level:
Beginners

The drupal project is moving from CVS to Git .  (at least I believe so).  It would be great to have an introduction on how to use this version control mechanism.  Even those that are not contributing modules / patches, it would still be a great intro to learn how to use Git on Github.

drush dl pizza?

Target Skill Level:
Intermediate

I want to learn more about drush ... I know the basics commands (dl, en, and up) but I really want to learn how to maximize what I know is a powerful module.

Techniques for effective development/production environments

Target Skill Level:
Intermediate

I'd love to see a session on best practices for syncing up development and production Drupal instances.

Intro to Performance Tuning

Target Skill Level:
Beginners

A drupal site does not have to be a high volume site to utilize performance enhancing techniques and modules.  In many cases a drupal site may sit on a shared hosting environment and still need to be tuned.

Session topics could include:

  • Custom modules
  • Apache tuning (i.e. memory, etc.)
  • MySQL tuning (i.e. indexes, etc.)
  • 404 pages
  • .htaccess
  • Cron
  • Caching (for anonymous / authenticated)
